Silica Dust WHS Regulations for Builders

Jan 16, 20266 min read

What is RCS and Why is it Dangerous?

Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) is created when materials like concrete, brick, and engineite stone are cut, ground, or drilled. These tiny particles are inhaled deep into the lungs, causing silicosis—an incurable and often fatal lung disease. The new regulations reflect the severe health risk.

Your Obligations as a Builder

Under the WHS Act, PCBUs must eliminate or minimise exposure to RCS 'so far as is reasonably practicable'. This includes using wet-cutting methods, providing RPE (Respiratory Protective Equipment), and crucially, ensuring post-work cleaning removes settled silica dust without re-aerosolising it.

How ProSan Australia Helps

We deploy H-Class HEPA-filtered vacuums (which capture particles down to 0.3 microns) and damp-wiping protocols for surfaces. Our team is trained in safe work practices for silica environments, ensuring your site is compliant before handover.
