The biggest mistake builders make is treating cleaning as a single event before handover.In reality, effective construction cleaning is a phased program that runs parallel to your build schedule. Each phase serves a specific purpose, and skipping stages leads to the "re-clean cycle" that frustrates everyone.
Phase 1: Rough Clean(During Construction)
Timing: Ongoing during the build phase
Purpose: Keep the site safe and workable for trades
This phase focuses on:
- Removal of packaging, wrapping, and protective materials
- Disposal of offcuts, rubble, and construction waste
- Clearing of access routes and work areas
- Basic dust control to protect installed finishes

Phase 2: Initial Clean(Post Lock - Up)

Phase 4: Defect Rectification(Post - Handover)
Timing: 24-48 hours response to defect list
Purpose: Address items identified during client walkthrough
Common defect clean items:
- Touch - up spots missed during final clean
- Marks left by defect rectification trades
- Dust from snag work(sanding, drilling)
- Final polish after all trades have exited
