The 5 Critical Checks Before Entering a Confined Space

Jan 28, 20265 min read

1. Isolate and Lock Out (LOTO)

Mechanical isolation isn't just turning a switch off. It means physically locking the auger drive, capping the inlet pipes, and verifying zero energy.

2. Gas Testing

Oxygen deficiency is silent. Decaying grain releases CO2, which displaces oxygen at the bottom of a vessel. We test at the top, middle, and bottom before anyone enters.

3. The Sentry

A confined space entry is a two-person job, minimum. The Sentry stands outside, maintains communication, and holds the rescue line. They never enter to attempt a rescue—they drag the entrant out or call 000.
